At a glance

When we hear the word Idukki, what comes to our mind is the sight of the Kuravan and Kurathi hills standing face to face, connected by the magnificent arch dam. At an altitude of about 3,000 feet above sea level, the Idukki reservoir lies like a small sea.

Since it was commissioned and dedicated to the nation by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi, on 12 February 1976, the Idukki Hydroelectric Project has been providing electricity without interruption to thousands of homes and institutions across Kerala. It has also been supplying the immense power required to operate huge machines. Therefore, it is impossible to look at the Idukki Hydroelectric Project without a deep sense of admiration and respect.

If we turn back the pages of history, we can arrive at the conclusion that the earliest inhabitants of this region belonged to the lineage of rulers who migrated from Tamil Nadu. Numerous ancient archaeological artefacts have also been discovered from various parts of the region.
